Migration & Displacement
Since the earliest times, humanity has been on the move. Some people move in search of work or economic opportunities, to join family, or to study. Others move to escape conflict, persecution, terrorism, or human rights violations.
Guirado himself left Spain in 1958 to escape the fascist regime of General Franco. He left for Australia on a ship following the 1958 Spanish-Australian migration agreement. The agreement provided assisted passages to Spanish migrants, many escaping poverty and hunger with jobs provided in Australia. His status as an immigrant deeply affected him as they were often treated poorly with racism discrimination. Many of his paintings depict Berbers and nomadic tribes that resonate with Guirado's own feelings of displacement yet search for a home and acceptance.
