Migrants

Throughout history, human movement has shaped our species. People relocate for employment, family, education, or to escape conflict, persecution, and human rights violations. In 1958, Guirado emigrated from Spain to Australia to flee General Franco's oppressive regime, traveling under the Spanish-Australian migration agreement that supported migrants seeking work.

Guirado's identity as an immigrant significantly influenced his art, as he faced racism and discrimination. His works often depict Berbers and nomadic tribes, reflecting his Andalusian roots and appreciation for the region's Moorish heritage. His wanderlust, evident in his travels and cultural engagements, parallels his personal experiences of displacement and the continual search for belonging and acceptance.
